ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER
Bay Pines, FL
Conceptual Design Proposal
The Bay Pines Learning Center will provide a new environmental setting for St. Petersburg College undergraduate in and outdoor research opportunities in marine science and also for all ages to raise enthusiasm about the natural environment.
The primary design intent was to have the building reinforce a sustainable theme where the natural site is restored and maintained and the sequence of learning travel to the building and the building itself, all emphasize the mission of environmental learning. The building was sited out on the point in a non-sensitive area to create a “learning journey”, to give the building itself as much interaction with the bays on both the east and west and be highly visible from distant shores. The parking is provided in the pine uplands with a low elevated walkway taking you across the saltern to the bay. Then a dock along the waterfront moving in and out of the mangroves as it slowly ascends to higher views and the small complex of nautical structures. The building is pulled apart to work around existing stands of trees and allow light to active research and kayak areas below. Major pylons and a cable system that minimizes the ground disruptions while also establishing the distinct nautical theme largely support the buildings.
