The design for the Prototype Elementary School "A" have been used eighteen times, in two counties.  The Prototype is designed to be sensitive to the scale of young students and keeps a very controlled and safe environment, where all exits and entrances are seen from the center of the school. The central area acts as a courtyard with intersecting boulevards, allowing for a compact and efficient footprint.

Education should be fun, and this prototype attempts to convey this thesis with the use of geometric forms, bridges, railing details, amphitheater, stage trellis and strong accent colors.  Student safety is the highest priority in this design.  The building is secured from the inside, but allows for an open-air plan.  Covered walkways provide shelter for students as they travel between buildings. Interior courtyards, which are aesthetically pleasing, and create feelings of calmness, tranquility, and safety.  A significant effort was made to keep the plan simple and recognizable by staff and students. Having one "main street" and "square," children feel comfortable and the majority of the campus may be supervised from one central location near the administration office.
